The Dark Wood Tarot (what I use most often, and here) is a shadow tarot deck. A shadow deck requires you to examine hidden aspects of the psyche during a reading. Shadow work is the exploration of the repressed, subconscious, often disconcerting aspects of our personality.

It is through illumination of our darkest aspects that we can become more self aware. It takes effort to repress, hide, and ignore elements of the self. Negativity, hatred, and jealousy are deep wells of energy that require conscious self guidance to harness their life giving potential.
